10/15/10 ASHLAND, OH -- River Teeth book prize winner, Ana Maria Spagna, will be visiting Ashland University on Tuesday, Oct. 26, and will present a reading from her book, "Test Ride on the Sunnyland Bus: A Daughter's Civil Rights Journey" at 7 p.m. in the Ronk Lecture Hall located in the Schar College of Education.
Spagna will chronicle the story of an American family, more specifically, her family, against the backdrop of a lesser-known story of the civil rights movement.

Rowland Blackley, director of Choral Activities, will conduct the Ashland University Choir and Ashland Chamber Singers. Stephanie Sikora, head of the Voice Area, will conduct the Women's Chorus.

10/13/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Deborah Sullivan, professor of Family and Consumer Sciences at Ashland University, has been selected as president-elect for the Ohio Affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).

Sullivan's three-year term began this summer during the national convention in Phoenix. She also will serve as president of the Ohio Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (OAFCS) during 2012-13, and as counselor during 2013-14.

Ashland Center for Nonviolence at Ashland University Awarded $2,000 from the United States Institute of Peace to Support Public Education for Peacebuilding

Ashland Center for Nonviolence at Ashland University has received $2,000 in funding support from the Public Education for Peacebuilding Support initiative of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). The support will enable Ashland Center for Nonviolence to present a conversation on the prevention of war titled, “Can We Prevent War?”

According to John Stratton, executive director of Ashland Center for Nonviolence, the grant will allow the center to bring together three scholars and experts to explore the current nature of war and the attempts to prevent war, including civil wars with the potential to create regional conflicts and the conflicts that erupt in states with failed governments.

3/30/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Directed by Arie Lipsky, several faculty members from the Ashland University Department of Music combine their talents with Lipsky for a chamber ensemble recital on Sunday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. 8/26/10 ASHLAND, OH -- Bob Votruba and his One Million Acts of Kindness Tour will be in Ashland and on the Ashland University campus Sept. 1 and 2.

Votruba is expected to park his blue tour bus by Bixler Hall on King Road, and he and his dog, Bogart, will be roaming the campus, talking to students, handing out literature and preaching about kindness.

Aaron Arnold, a sophomore theatre major from Chardon, is currently one of the top three contenders for a role on AMC's Mad Men show. The voting, which is part of a contest sponsored by American Movie Classics Co. and Banana Republic, will continue through Sept. 17.

This week of camp allows campers to explore their creative side. Children of ages 5 to 12 will be provided the opportunity to discover their ability to invent, create, and construct. Dr. Kanter gave the keynote address at a town hall meeting on “College Affordability” in which she noted that the U.S. Department of Education selected Ashland University as the location of the Town Hall because of the University’s recent development of programs in response to student and family financial concerns.

 

Ashland University Theatre Professor Has Minor Role in Clooney Film

10/4/11 ASHLAND, OH -- The George Clooney film, "The Ides of March," will be appearing in theaters nationwide on Friday, Oct. 7, and Ashland University Assistant Professor of Theatre Fabio Polanco has a role in that film.

"I play a security guard, sort of the secret service variety," Polanco said. "I have two lines and my scene is with Marisa Tomei, Ryan Gosling and Max Minghella."

Polanco said that in his scene, he talks with Tomei, who is a newspaper reporter and is trying to get information from Gosling's character.

Ashland University's Matt Portner Named to National Board

8/5/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Matthew Portner, director of Auxiliary Services at Ashland University, recently accepted the position of Central Regional Representative to the Board of Directors of the National Association of College Auxiliary Services (NACAS).

Although Portner has been a member of NACAS for several years and served on several committees, this is his first national position. He will begin his new role in November.  Previously, Portner served as the president of the Central Region.

Ashland University’s Recreation Center is offering an eight week, indoor soccer session for youth and adult teams, with play starting in January.

As in the past, the Recreation Center is offering a youth session for ages U9/10 and U11/12 with both boys and girls divisions along with an open adult session for ages 16 and older. The session will again offer a high school division for those looking to play in a younger category for adults.

Limited Ticket Availability for Ashland University's Madrigal Feaste

11/23/10 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University Department of Music is announcing limited ticket availability for the 35th Annual Madrigal Feaste. Although performances are slated for Wednesday through Sunday, Dec. 1 to 5, the Wednesday and Sunday evening performances have the best remaining seating options. While the Saturday performance is completely sold out, only single seats at various tables are available for the Thursday and Friday performances.  All performances begin at 6:30 p.m. in Redwood Hall.

Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition Set

3/7/11 ASHLAND, OH -- The Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition opens Thursday, March 17, in the Coburn Gallery with a reception to be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This exhibition will offer $1,300 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Everett S. Caldemeyer Award, Provost Award, People's Choice Award and awards in each of the six art areas: painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital media, drawing and ceramics. The awards ceremony will begin at 5 p.m.

Department of Recreational Services to Hold Youth Sports and Activities Summer Camp

5/12/10 ASHLAND, Ohio --Ashland University's Department of Recreational Services will be hosting a Sports and Activities Summer camp during the summer months. The first session begins June 21 - 25. The second session is from July 12-16; and the final session takes place August 2-6. Camps are held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. with extended care available.

The camps are open to any youth between the ages of 5 and 12. Campers will have fun filled days where they will participate in team building and sports activities, rock climbing, arts and crafts, and will enjoy time in the pool.

Ashland University Theatre Majors Perform Unique Musical Theatre Revue

Erika is the daughter of James and Karen Sullivan of Medina, Ohio, and majors in accounting and finance.  She plans to graduate in May of 2013.

From Mentor, Ohio, and graduate of Mentor High School, music education major and clarinetist Jonathan Barko presents his senior recital at 3 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., Jane Berkner, flute, and Stephen Aron, guitar, will perform a duo faculty recital. Both recitals are free and open to the public.

Ashland University Professor Plays Major Role in Journal Publication

1/5/12 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Mark Hamilton, associate professor of philosophy at Ashland University, has played a major role in the most recent issue of the Journal of the Philosophy of Sport published by the International Association of Philosophers of Sport.

Published last month, the journal contains a special section -- "Symposium on Officiating and Adjudication in Sport" - that was edited by Hamilton. In addition, Hamilton wrote an article, titled "The Moral Ambiguity of the Makeup Call: Can Two Wrongs Make a Right?" -- for the special section.

Ashland University Psychology Department Sees Increase in Student Scholarly Activities

3/22/12 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University’s psychology department has seen a shift in the focus of its students over the past eight to 10 years, with many more undergraduate students now being involved in research and attending regional and national conferences than ever before.

 

“We are now seeing students who are getting involved in research activities as second-semester students in their first year,” said Dr. Mitchell Metzger, chair and professor of psychology at Ashland University. 

 

Ashland University to Host Gourmet Harvest Dinner

Ashland University will be hosting a Gourmet Harvest Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m. The dinner will be hosted in the VIP Room of the Robert Troop Center and will allow those in attendance to enjoy the meal while watching the AU football game.

The AU football team will be playing Grand Valley State and game tickets and VIP parking passes are included in the $75 per person event price. Space is limited, so reserve your spot as soon as possible. The deadline to purchase tickets is Oct. 24.

Ashland University Professor Awarded Psi Chi Faculty Advisor Research Grant

9/12/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Diane Bonfiglio, assistant professor of psychology at Ashland University, has been awarded a Faculty Advisor Research Grant from Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology.

Dr. Bonfiglio is one of 12 Psi Chi advisors nationwide to receive this award for the 2011-2012 academic year. The $2,000 grant will partially fund a planned collaborative study by Dr. Bonfiglio and Dr. Mitchell Metzger, professor of psychology and department chair. The study will investigate physiological reactions in a directed forgetting procedure.

12/7/10 ASHLAND, OH -- The Honorable Jeff Payton, retired Mansfield Municipal Court Judge, will present the address at Ashland University's winter commencement ceremony. The event will be held Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. in Kates Gymnasium in the Physical Education Center. Payton's address is titled, "I Accept."

Payton was raised in Mansfield, Ohio, and educated in Mansfield Public Schools, graduating from Malabar High School. He received his bachelor of science degree in biology from Ashland University in 1969 and a law degree from the Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 1975.

Ashland University Completes $1.2 Million Library Project

8/29/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University has completed a $1.2 million library upgrade this summer that included the installation of solar panels on the lower level roof of the tallest building in Ashland County.

"This is the first time we have installed solar panels on this campus," said Rick Ewing, vice president of facilities management. "Our primary motivation was not necessarily financial, but the potential and opportunity for us to move in the direction of reducing the impact we have on our environment. It's a first step for us."

9/8/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Craig Hovey, assistant professor of religion at Ashland University, will be speaking about his most recent publications at a book launch and public lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Ronk Lecture Hall of the Schar College of Education on the Ashland University campus.

Hovey's book titled "Bearing True Witness: Truthfulness in Christian Practice" was published by Eerdmans in July. It is a book about the courage to face the truth about reality, Hovey says, even when it is uncomfortable and even dangerous.

Dan O’Rourke, associate professor of communication studies at Ashland University, has co-authored a book with his son, Morgan Bostdorff O’Rourke. The book, titled "A Good Town Speaking Well," is a history of the Wooster High School Speech and Debate team.

5/12/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Wellington resident Megan Williams was honored May 7 when Ashland University named its co-valedictorians during its Spring 2011 commencement exercises.

Williams graduated summa cum laude, gamma alpha kappa with a bachelor of science in education degree with a major in middles grades education.

A 2007 Firelands High School graduate, Williams is the daughter of Timothy and Donna Williams of Wellington. The valedictorian achieved a 4.0 grade point average. Twinsburg resident Ashley Bissell was honored as the other co-valedictorian.

Evansville Couple Donates to Ashland University's 'Bringing Spirit to Campus' Campaign

4/11/10 ASHLAND, Ohio --An Evansville couple, Bob and Lisa Jones, have donated $250,000 to Ashland University for the construction of the new Athletic Complex at the University. The "Study Room" located in the end zone facility is named in their honor.

Bob and Lisa Jones are both 1979 graduates of Ashland. Bob has since served as a trustee of the University from 2000 to 2009 and was named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year in 2006.

5/8/10 ASHLAND, Ohio --Ohio Senate President and Ashland resident Bill Harris shared his thoughts on the importance of servant leadership with Ashland University graduates on Saturday.

In a rain-shortened ceremony on the front lawn of Founders Hall, Harris cut his spring commencement address short and told those graduating that "the issue of servant leadership is facing you now as you approach your new career."

Harris said that the prophet Micah, when questioned by naysayers, told others to "do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your Lord."

7/13/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Kris Hovsepian, assistant professor of marketing at Ashland University and a native of Berea, has been inducted into the Sam Walton Fellow Hall of Fame for the work she has done with Ashland University's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE).

Hovsepian has served as the adviser to the SIFE group at Ashland University since 1991. The group has captured first place in regional competition nine times out of the last 19 years.
Hovsepian is a native of Berea and the daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Barr, longtime residents of Berea.

11/11/10 ASHLAND, OH -- The Ashland University Recreational Services Department has planned a Winter Sports and Activities Camp for children who are ages 5 to 12.

The camp will include two sessions: Session 1 will be Dec. 4-6 from 4 to 6:30 p.m., while Session 2 will be Dec. 7 from 4 to 9 p.m. Drop-off for the camps will be at 3:45 p.m. and pick up will be 6:30 p.m. for session one and 9 p.m. for session 2.

There is an option to attend both sessions if campers would like. The cost for session 1 is $45, for session 2 is $25 and for both sessions it is $60.

Ashland University Receives $5 Million Challenge Gift

7/7/10 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University announced Tuesday that it has received a $5 million naming challenge gift for a new academic building for its College of Nursing.

Ashland University President Dr. Frederick Finks said the $12 million campaign for the College of Nursing, which will be located in Mansfield, received a jump start through this $5 million challenge gift from Ashland University alumnus and longtime supporter Dwight Schar. 4/4/11 ASHLAND, OH -- The Ashland University Jazz Orchestra (AUJO), under the direction of Dr. Scott Garlock, completed its annual tour on March 24 to 26 with several performances and awards in Pennsylvania.

The tour began in Butler, Pa., for the state's district V annual honors band event. Dr. Garlock presented a jazz improvisation and scatting clinic followed by a performance by the Ashland University Jazz Orchestra for approximately 250 students and 70 band directors.

The earliest graduate in attendance was Helen Wappner from the Class of 1936. The most recent graduate was Becky Mangas of the Class of 2009.  Members attended from a variety of states, including California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

5/12/10 ASHLAND, Ohio --Ashland University's Department of Recreational Services will be hosting a Community Indoor Basketball League during the summer months. Play begins Tuesday, June 15, and will run every Tuesday night (with Wednesday night as a second night of play if necessary) until August 10.

Wes Bonadio, assistant director of programming for the Department of Recreational Services, said the league is open to adults age 17 and older and teams will play five-on-five with a maximum roster size of 12 players.

Davida Crescencia de Fatima Mesquita has received the Presidential International Scholarship from Ashland University and she will major in business at Ashland.

Ashland University to Offer French Film Festival

10/13/11 ASHLAND, OH -- The Ashland University Department of Foreign Languages, the French Club and Sigma Phi Iota are hosting its second annual Tournées French Film Festival, which will open with "Persepolis" on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

The festival will feature five award-winning films on five consecutive Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. from Oct. 19 to Nov. 16 in the Hawkins-Conard Student Center Auditorium. All events are free and open to the public and the films will be in French with English subtitles.

1/27/12 ASHLAND, OH -- The Coburn Gallery at Ashland University announces a national juried exhibition titled “Time will Tell: A Show of Artistic Wisdom and Experience,” which will feature artists at least 50 years of age residing in the United States.

This exhibition, which will run from May 18 through June 15, 2012, will culminate in a collection of works that embody the creativity and innovation of artists ages 50 years and older at all levels of artistic endeavor.

2/16/12 ASHLAND, OH -- A College Affordability Town Hall meeting that will feature a visit and keynote address by U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter will be held on the Ashland University campus Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. in the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel.

 

Kanter, who was nominated to this position by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in June of 2009, reports to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. She oversees policies, programs, and activities related to postsecondary education, adult and career-technical education, and federal student aid. 

Ashland University's Eagle Investment Group Adds Third Fund

9/13/10 ASHLAND, OH -- In response to the growth and success of Ashland University's Eagle Investment Group, the University's Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees has granted a third fund for the selected finance majors to manage.

Students in Ashland's Eagle Investment Group were first offered the chance to gain practical experience by managing the University's investments in January of 2000 and have managed a portion of the University's investment portfolio ever since.

10/28/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland native Victoria Donati, a 1989 graduate of Ashland University and a graduate of Ashland High School, has been chosen to receive the first "Inspiration Award" from the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law.

Donati, who currently serves as the General Counsel and Secretary for Crate & Barrel, will receive her award Nov. 3 at the Second Annual Leadership Forum held in Chicago. Donati is the daughter of longtime Ashland residents Robert and Kathleen Wendling.

On Friday, March 18, the bookstore is hosting an American Girl Pajama Party from 6 to 8 p.m. The American Girl Pajama Party will feature food, refreshments, stories and activities and participants are encouraged to bring their dolls. 9/8/10 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University Theatre is cleaning its closets and hosting a costume sale on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heritage Room in the John C. Myers Convocation Center.

Items range from $.25 to $15, and include a large variety of costumes ideal for Halloween. Highlights include men's suits, military uniforms, a cow costume, Cabaret costumes (multiples of the same costume), western dresses, harem hats, dozens of wigs, and props (curtains, bedding, wall paper, table clothes, etc.).

"Curious Critters" features stunning animal images and entertaining vignettes, with animals talking about their everyday lives in nature.

5/19/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Scott Van Loo has been named the new vice president of Enrollment Management and Marketing at Ashland University. He will start at Ashland on May 31.

Van Loo, who comes to Ashland from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., replaces Colleen Murphy, who took a similar position at Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C.

At Ashland, Van Loo will take over an enrollment management area that is in the process of being reorganized and is expected to include both undergraduate and graduate enrollment areas.
